Hello I am David and very much hoping I can help one of the new Trustees settle in. Rural Media was my first Trustee role which I took up about 5 years ago and it does take a couple of meetings to get to grips with how the organisation works and how best to influence it as a Trustee. I became the chair in 2022 and we have been going through an exciting period of expansion since then giving all the Trustees plenty to think about as we work with the management team, supporting and occasionally challenging them.
I am a journalist who trained in local newspapers, worked in commercial radio and then had more than 30 very happy years at the BBC where I ended up running the corporation's local and regional services across England. I try to bring a journalist's curiosity to our Board meetings and at the same time make the most of the range of skills and backgrounds that different Trustees bring to the table. I also aim to end meetings on time! Away from Rural Media I do some mentoring, a bit of judging work for the Royal Television Society and I am currently helping with a project to improve the way river water is monitored. I also mind a vegetable patch with my wife at my home in Worcestershire, run a cycling club and devote a fair amount of time to our three grown up children.
